I am interested in how other people got into BJD's.

Personally, my friend got me into them. She told me about the dolls, and I was pretty skeptical. She then took me to her house and showed me pictures off of the Luts site, and I was hooked.

Within a month I had my DOD Kirill ordered and on his way. xD

So how about the rest of you? How were you introduced into this wonderful hobby? Jumpy

Nice. xD
I looked through so many sites before I decided on my Kirill. I think I had three or four I wanted from each site. xD
Then I saw Kirill, and absolutely HAD to have him. 83

Interesting question! One of my favorites.

I got into the hobby because of a friend of mine. She discovered them on Ebay while looking for "elf dolls" and stumbled upon them. For months, she talked to me about them. My first introduction to them in person was her Dolkot Elf Lief and I thought she was pretty, but...dear God the price! I could not see myself spending that much money on something like that! I was buying manga and anime, CDs and movie DVDs and anime collectables. I wasn't going to just plop down that kind of cash on one thing.

However, I was intrigued by the idea of transforming the doll into a tangible form for my D&D characters. I loved my characters and the idea that I could actually see them, to hug them, was something so cool. So I said that if I were to get one, my first one would have to be a boy elf to be my Kilian.

Then one day in late December of 2005, my friend calls me up at work to tell me a boy elf has appeared on Ebay. When I got home, he was still up, it was just a head, but as just a head he was super expensive. I hemmed and hawed for a bit over what to do and then...suddenly...I had clicked the Buy It Now button and he was mine. Within a week, I had bought him a body (from the same seller who was selling it separately) and another full doll to be his sister. Apparently I had been hooked.

And now, over 5 years later, my collection has grown. All in thanks to my friend.

That's about the same as I was before I got into BJDs. xD
All manga, anime, and posters.
The price scared me at first, too. It still does sometimes, but they are so worth it. 83

I think they're worth it now. They're so special to me now, they're not just some random pieces of plastic. They my characters, they have personality. They're like that next step up from that lovable stuffed animal collection. Or maybe several steps up. lol

I agree. xD
I rely on my dolls to keep me company when there's no one around I can really count on. It may be strange to others, but to me they're irreplaceable. Like, how my Kirill fell and chipped his nose.. spring of '09? But, I refuse to get another Kirill to replace him, since he means so much to me. So I try to deal with it until I can get the courage to get his nose sanded.

And out of curiosity, how many of your dolls are D&D characters?

A friend of my mother who collects Barbie dolls gave her a bunch of older Haute Doll Magazines. One of them was the Special BJD issue where you could order Volks Jun Tachibana and Volks Isao Nanjou. I really loved them, my mom had collected dolls for years, but I had never seen ones so nice looking ( was big into anime at the time, still am and so they were right up my ally), but like most people I balked a the prices. I showed the book to my sister when she was home for a visit and she loved them too. Next thing I knew she had bought a Luts Soony. I decided if she could do it, so could I and after a year of saving I bought Kiyoshi.

I almost didn't buy him. When I saw him, it was when Elf doll was still a sub-heading on either the Luts or Dollmore site. They Red mold had me at first glance, but then the link was gone. I didn't know much about the dolls at that time, so I didn't even know it was a separate company and I thought maybe they were all sold out, so I turned my attentions to the luts El mold, with intent of making him Akito from the anime Fruits basket. Regular Then I had the brilliant thought of do a google search for Elf Doll and found their site. Red was more now, but he was there. So he was mine.

Fun story about the haute doll magazine. I loved Jun, my sister loved Isao. Now years later we both managed to score them second hand. She got her Isao fullset for an awesome price on Ebay from someone thinning out their collection, I got Jun (sadly not fullset) after putting up a want to buy on the DoA market place.

My grandmother had always been into porcelain dolls. She tried and tried to get me to like them too, but I never did. She was so proud when I got into BJDs. xD Even though she is always calling my boys, girls. But what can you do? xD;

I've always always always been into dolls since I was little. Baby dolls to barbie dolls to porcelain dolls. About two and half years ago I spotted a picture on DA that I thought was a person. Which surprised me greatly was that the "person" was a doll. So, finding out what kinda doll it was, I went looking and found a bunch of stuff on BJDs. It was love at first sight. My very first boy, Cyrus, who is a Kid Delf TTORI, I picked out two years ago after looking around for half a year. I finally got him last November, andd they've already mulipied. Yeah.. I guess you could say i'm hooked. ^^;

There are so many great BJD photographers on DA. I often forget the dolls are not alive. Such great illusions they can create with their photography.

Same here. I have a few chips on some of my dolls from little tumbles they've taken, but they just wouldn't be "them" if I replaced them with another one.

I'd say that about 90% of my dolls are either D&D characters or children of D&D characters. It's basically my Soom and some of my tinies that aren't characters. Some of my dolls became characters after I got the doll.

Deleriumsedge: I have always loved Red, too, along with Jun and Isao, so I can't blame you! I think Red is the best looking Elf Doll.

Laugh I've been playing D&D since I was 17 and that was...well, quie a number of years ago (13 and 1/2 dodgy ). Over that time, I've been in quite a number of campaigns with several different DMs and in most of those campaigns I've played more than two characters each. My largest grouping of characters per campaign was 5 or 6. (Generally, we were a small gaming group and tended to play mulitple characters each to get a decent adventuring group - although it ended up in us having small roving armies. lol) So the fact that most of my 35 dolls are D&D characters and I haven't even gotten all of my characters in doll form isn't that crazy. Or maybe it is. Grin

Maybe it isn't. xD I'm just a newb when it comes to D&D, so I shouldn't be a judge.
I really need to get back into it, but I don't really know if I can find anyone to do it with... (other than my dad xD)

Oh, and JinMay, I don't have to worry about dropping DM's since my dad was/is mine. xD He used to play all the time when he was younger, so he took over the role pretty enthusiastically. xD

I'd have to agree with Red being the best mold. I have never much liked the others, except maybe Hazy.

I got into BDJ because if this guy here ----> http://www.volks.co.jp/en/superdollfie/sd13/isaonanjou_dolpa12/index_isaonanjou_dolpa12.aspx

About six or seven years ago I knew nothing about BJDs. I was surfing the net looking for anime fan sites and..I saw him on a image thumbnail. At first I thought he was a guy from a 3D anime or something (don't laugh!) so I wanted to know more about this wickedly awesome looking guy. Sadly the anime fan site had NO information but his name which is Isao ver. 2.

By Googling his name I found the company VOLKS which at the time the English site was...well not so English friendly lol, but I end up learning about BJDs for the first time through the broken translations going on in the VOLKS site and how EXPENSIVE they are.

Because I saw the price of VOLKS; I only admired from pretty pics and forums..until I discovered other more affordable companies were around...I think Dream Of Doll and Luts was just opening up to the other counties waaaay back then.

So no one really got me into BJDs, it was more like a single link got me into this obsession.
